Greece produces some of the world’s best honey. Between ideal climate conditions (think long, dry, hot summers and mild winters) and the rich biodiversity of the land, the resulting honey is unmatched in taste, texture, and nutritional benefits. Did you know that Greece is home to many indigenous plants and herbs that can’t be found anywhere else? It’s true!
Greek honey is a treasure. It’s antibacterial, rich in antioxidants and flavonoids, and helps the body to regulate blood sugar levels. The darker the color of the honey, the higher the level of antioxidants. We love it because we know it’s good for our bodies and because it’s simply delicious!
Portoula honey is produced especially for us by a 4th generation beekeeper from our family’s village – Akovos – in the Arcadian mountains of Greece. Our beekeeper is passionate about maintaining the health of the hives and practices nomadic beekeeping – moving hives as needed to optimize climate conditions and environment for their beloved bees. This is very labor intensive and done only by the most dedicated of beekeepers.
Our honey is gently extracted from the hives using centrifugal force and never heated, retaining the raw and beautifully unfiltered characteristics of true artisanal honey. Single estate means we never mix our product with honey from other producers. So you get a premium product to enjoy and to gift, while also supporting sustainable apiculture.
Portoula honey is produced with love and the deepest respect for the environment.
